ALFONSO MARTINEZ
Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

Alfonso Martinez serves as Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for NII Holdings, Inc. As such, he is responsible for developing and implementing human capital strategies and practices to improve the company’s performance domestically and globally. He also oversees all human resources functions, ranging from recruiting and training to employee relations and services.
Martinez joined the company on December 8, 2008. Previously, he was Group Vice President of Global Talent for Sodexo, an international leader of integrated food and facilities management services. In this role, he was responsible for designing the framework for global talent management, and for the development and succession planning of top executives in the 80 countries where the company operates. Additional duties included talent assessment and performance management among many other talent-related initiatives. Martinez also served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources in a division of Sodexo that generated $1.5B in revenues and had 20,000 employees working across different geographic locations.
As an advocate of corporate responsibility, Martinez also represented Sodexo among not-for-profit external organizations such as the National Hispanic Corporate Council, the National Society of Hispanic MBA’s, the Hispanic College Fund, and Catalyst. He also served as a high-ranking official for the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility in Washington, D.C., and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, among others.
Prior to his time at Sodexo, Martinez held various positions in the human resources field spending 15 years at Marriott International in a number of key operational positions, including leading a centralized human resource function servicing 500 hotels throughout the United States.
Martinez is a graduate of the University of Denver School of Business and earned a master’s degree in Organizational Development from Johns Hopkins University. He completed one year within the graduate school of government at JHU as well as Corporate Governance coursework at the Harvard Business School, was certified as an MBTI facilitator, and is a professional executive coach.
